Now that spring is almost here, it’s time for farmers to get their tractors ready for the growing season. Long stretches without being used can be just as bad for farm equipment as being overworked, and that’s why the experts at Flieg’s Equipment have created this guide to spring tractor prep.

Fluids Inspection

Cold weather can cause your tractor’s engine, transmission, and hydraulic fluids to condense. That’s why it's important to check these fluids for impurities. Otherwise, your tractor might start to overheat or otherwise malfunction the first time you start it. Don’t forget to swap out your filters as well. While you’re at it, check the hoses for any cracks and other signs of damage.

Check Belts and Brakes

Tractor belts can become cracked and brittle when exposed to cold weather. Since a belt snap can cause serious interior damage to your tractor, it’s best to do a quick check. Brakes can also rust if unused for long periods of time, so don’t forget to test your tractor’s brakes before using it the first time.

Charge Battery

If your tractor’s batteries have sat in storage all winter, by this time they’re likely completely drained. In most cases, you should be able to simply connect the battery to a charger and let it sit for a few hours. If your tractor’s battery no longer holds charge, then it’s time to replace it. Only attempt a jump start as a last resort.

Replace Fuel

If you forget to add fuel stabilizer to your tractor’s tank before putting it into storage, the fuel won’t be usable come springtime. We recommend checking the fuel regardless. If your fuel has turned dark, become thick, is full of metal flakes, or is otherwise contaminated, you’ll likely need to drain it out and dispose of it.
